Silent hill why are there monsters

Gum Heads represent Walters adolescent hatred for the grown-ups of the world. Imagine, if you will, the torment of being forced to wear a straitjacket made from your own skin. This is the Lying Figures entire existence, shambling around the streets of Silent Hill while they futilely try to break free of their fleshy restraints.

When they see James Sunderland, they creep towards him at an alarming speed, emitting an unsettling hissing or spewing poisonous vomit from their disfigured faces. And, for some unknown reason, they seem to be wearing platform shoes. Like the Bubble Head Nurse, the Lying Figure is an allusion to James extensive time in hospitals while caring for his sick wife.

Their twitchy struggle to escape their bindings represents the frustration that James feels, weighed down by the responsibility of caring for the increasingly spiteful Mary.

Not so much terrifying as skin-crawlingly creepy, the Mannequins are two distinctly feminine, ballerina-like lower halves that have been fused together at the waist. Bioshock cribbed Sander Cohens plaster bodies off these spidery leg-monsterstheyll stand still while youre looking at them, then start skittering towards you if you get too close.

One pair of legs supports the hideous creature, while the other acts like praying mantis mandibles that slice in your direction. James Sunderland is in desperate need of therapy, because these disturbing projections of his sexual frustration are getting out of hand. The Mannequins also play a part in one of Silent Hills most disturbing scenes but well come back to that in a bit.

SH: Origins wasnt exactly the scariest game in the series, but dang it if this boss design doesnt freak us out. Say hello to the mother of Travis Grady the games main character albeit a twisted, repulsive embodiment of her memory. With a new look that calls Clive Barkers creations to mind, the bindings on her feet and the metal cage impaling her torso all portray a trapped, tormented soul.

Toss in some cheek-stretching wires for good measure, and youve got a boss who cant be killed quickly enough. Their most important feature is their split head, which seem to function independently of each other, even sometimes issuing two separate yelps when Heather attacks them.

They represent Heather's divided self, the two heads being joined together the same way Alessa and Heather are two halves of the same person. Most of the victims of serial killer Walter Sullivan manifest as unkillable ghosts that can only be temporarily disposed of. The only exception are the two children Billy and Miriam Locane, who both had their hearts removed after Walter killed them with an axe.

The Locane children were reincarnated in the form of this monster instead, a gargantuan creature with two heads that stomps around on its massive arms. In addition to representing the Locane's murder, it's possible they're also symbolic of the severe attachment Walter has for his mother, since they are physically joined together.

They're tied in both with the theme of sickness and with the theme of sexuality. Their nurse's outfit is far more sexualized than a regular hospital uniform, representing James' sexual frustration that stemmed from his wife Mary being sick for an extended period of time. Her illness also contributed to anxieties about hospitals and health care for James. Also, part of the reason they're "bubblehead" nurses is because their faces are completely covered by cloth, perhaps as a reference to the method of Mary's death.

In the non-American releases of the first Silent Hill , these creatures were replaced by monsters called Mumblers because the Grey Children too closely resembled actual children. There was some concern over encouraging the player to kill childlike creatures.

Admittedly, the Grey Children are very reminiscent of children, probably because they actually represent the other children that attended school alongside Alessa. She was tormented by her classmates for being a "witch" and were thus perceived as hostile, even murderous, monsters.

This one gets pretty dark. Its shape is similar to two figures lying on a bed, one of which is large and muscular, looming over the smaller figure.

If you can't tell from that description alone, it seems pretty clear the Abstract Daddy represents the sexual abuse Angela suffered at the hands of her father. To really drive the symbolism home, the first time you encounter this creature is in a small fleshy room with pistons moving in the walls. Courtney graduated from the University of Tampa with a writing degree and has only just now got around to using it professionally.

In addition to writing for Valnet, she also lives the ultimate bookworm fantasy of working in a library. Sometimes, someone only needs to have a psyche powered by strong enough emotions or memories such as trauma, sadness, fear, etc. Monsters are often very symbolic, due to the fact that they are manifested from the minds of a major character in the plot, whether it be the protagonist, antagonist, or other characters.

The nature and appearance of the monsters are linked to whoever is experiencing the powers of the town. A guidebook implies that the "Manifestations of Delusions" memo is related to the origins of monsters.

The monsters may also be the "silent spirits" or "silenced spirits" mentioned in the "Lost Memories" book. By "spirits", the Native Americans that first inhabited the town meant not only their deceased relatives, but also the spirits that they believed inhabited the trees, rocks, and water around them. However, the exact nature and existence of the creatures is deliberately left to speculation. Another possibility includes that the monsters themselves are actually hallucinations that have no actual foundation outside the characters' minds.

In Silent Hill 3 , Claudia Wolf mentions that they have come to witness the rebirth of mankind and the arrival of the new paradise. Vincent Smith suggests that they may be something non-monstrous for example, humans, spirits, angels, gods, beings from other dimensions, manifestations, etc. Whether or not Vincent really was joking, or just doing damage control after giving Heather too much information, is up to the player to infer, but monsters who appear to be really people include Leonard Wolf , the Missionary , and Scrapers as elaborated upon in Silent Hill 3' s section below.

The Book of Lost Memories also suggests the Nurses may be human in origin. It is also interesting to note that many of Silent Hill's monsters are very "twitchy" or erratic in their movements as if they're unused to the bodies they are using or are trying to break free of them.

The monsters in the first entry are manifested from the repressed thoughts of Alessa Gillespie and her fears of her cruel classmates , adults, and large dogs , added to her memories of her insect collection and hospitalization after her burning by her own mother. The creatures are made of living flesh and are bloody in appearance. They also take irregular forms that resemble insects and even humans.

In early concepts for the game, Alessa would have had fear of other animals as well: there are unused models in the game files for monsters based on butterflies, frogs, monkeys, snakes, chickens, and even ostriches and stingrays.

The monsters in the second entry are from James Sunderland's repressed memories of the murder of his wife Mary , his sexual anxiety , and wish to be punished for his crimes ; Angela Orosco's suffering due to years of sexual abuse from her own father ; and Eddie Dombrowski's murderous thoughts towards everyone that mocked him in the past are all factors which helped to create new monsters and unique Otherworlds.

A root-like growth covers his face and several flesh-covered bodies are hooked to his 'trunk. Sepulcher manifests after Alex confronts order member Sam Bartlett with his son Joey's watch. Bartlett tosses the watch down where it sinks into the ground, causing the tree behind him to uproot, unearthing Sepulcher. Sepulcher then crushes Sam beneath his massive hand.

Like Asphyxia and Scarlet, Sepulcher's appearance is rooted in both his father's perception of him and the nature of his death. Bartlett buried him alive as a sacrifice for the Order. The bag that shrouds Sepulcher's body when he first appears is a nod to the bag Joey was buried in and the overall tree symbolism reflects the boy's love for nature in life.

Silent Hill sure likes its fusion-based monsters. Siam follows a similar theme, appearing as a masculine and feminine figure fused together and bound by straps and other bondage gear. The masculine figure is large and stocky, with club-like appendages. The female is strapped to its back, hands tied above her head with her stiletto-covered feet flailing about. Siam evokes a sense of helplessness and codependency. This could reflect several male-female relationships that exist in the game, including the relationship between Alex's mother and father, his own relationship with his mother, and the interactions between Alex and Elle Holloway.

As Siams always appear when Elle turns up missing or encounters trouble, the creature might symbolize their growing bond. Alternatively, Siam may imply that Elle is only another burden to Alex, following him around and causing problems while he does the heavy lifting of the investigation. Another popular theory states that Siam is a parody of marriage, specifically, the marriage of Silent Hill 2 protagonist, James, to his wife, Mary.

The BDSM elements represent James' unfulfilled sexual desires and the female's position on the male's back creates the impression of an inescapable burden.

Killing Siam unlocks the "Shades of James" achievement. When you also compare Siam's female aspect to the stiletto-wearing Lying Figure of Silent Hill 2 , you'll find this disturbing theory has real weight behind it.

Wheelman is the final boss of Silent Hill: Downpour and also appears throughout the game. A massive, grotesque creature, it takes the form of an emaciated corpse, getting its name from the wheelchair and life support machinery fused to it.

More machinery and wires wind through the exposed rib cage; top this off with a tumor-obstructed face and some telekinetic powers and you've got yourself a boss fight to remember. He is a manifestation of Murphy's memory of Frank Coleridge, and later his guilt surrounding Frank's death.

Wheelman may also represent the darker side of Murphy's nature, similar to James' connection with Pyramid Head. Frank's image manifests in Silent Hill as a representation of Murphy's conscience. As the Wheelman embodies Frank's deteriorated state, he may also symbolize the decay of Murphy's morals as he allowed his son's death to push him further into the darkness.
